During the winter, migrating waterfowl, including upwards of 50,000 Sandhill Cranes and some endangered Whooping Cranes, stop over at the refuge on their way south.
Quiet and stable touring kayaks are one of the best ways to observe these and other wintering species in the main channel of the refuge. Participants should have previous kayaking experience because of cooler winter weather, but is not required. Appropriate for ages 16 and up. The Hiwassee Refuge is also steeped in Native American history, the group will stop to visit the Cherokee Removal Memorial Park near Blythe Ferry.
