postponed: Rapid Learning: Intro to Whitewater Kayaking Skills Class

May 27, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm EDT

Right now, we’d be gearing up for our summer skills sessions out at Chester Frost Park. Unfortunately, all of that has been put on pause due to the impact of COVID19 and we have made the tough decision to postpone all of our public programs, inlcuding our Rapid Learning skills sessions, through the end of May. Even that timeline is subject to change. In place of our weekly Wednesday skills sessions at the lake, we plan to offer virtual skills sessions and a Q&A series. We hope you’ll make plans to join us online in our effort to keep the stoke to boat high until we can get back out on the water again.  Learn to whitewater kayak with us! Outdoor Chattanooga’s Rapid Learning Whitewater Program provides formal and equipped kayak instruction for beginning and seasoned kayakers.  Learn to whitewater kayak with us! Outdoor Chattanooga’s Rapid Learning Whitewater Program provides formal and equipped kayak instruction for beginning and seasoned kayakers.

To begin, participants should attend an Introduction to Kayaking Class to learn essential skills and safe paddling techniques in the calm waters of the lake or pool. These classes are offered regularly throughout the year and can be joined anytime. Instruction is provided in a group setting with the emphasis on building skills according to the pace of each individual and paddling goals. Equipment is provided, or paddlers may bring their own.

This dynamic program aims to get paddlers safely and comfortably paddling up to class III whitewater. Our instructors have years of instructional experience, on a variety of rivers worldwide and are nationally certified. Kayakers are eligible to attend instructional river trips once they have demonstrated essential skills such as confident wet exits, basic self-rescue, and effective maneuvering of the kayak during a Skills Class at the lake or pool.

Join any time of the year; no prior experience, reservations, or equipment required to attend a skills class. Your first visit is free! If you’re hooked after the first free session, sign up to become a Rapid Learning Member to access instruction and equipment for an entire year! $75 individual membership or $125 for a family membership.

Kayak skills classes and the Rapid Learning Program are most appropriate for ages 8 and older. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Skills classes occur every Wednesday, May through September (except July 4 week) at Chester Frost County Park, at the far end of the swimming beach by the first boat ramp.
Pick a session time.
Session 1   |  6:00 – 7:00 p.m.
Session 2   |  7:00 – 8:00 p.m.

All equipment provided. No reservation or prior experience required to attend.

Inclement weather may delay or cancel the classes. We do our best to continue classes in the rain, but not lightning. Cancellations are posted on the Rapid Learning Whitewater Program Facebook page for immediate communications.
